Adele poured the herbal tea into her cup, wrapped the blanket around her shoulders, turned on the table light, and then pulled Bloodbone’s journal toward her. It was nearly dark outside and the Roche Harbor marina had already settled into evening-quiet mode.

Roland had chosen to stay on Shaw Island with Ophelia, indicating to Adele and the others that he would likely remain there until she passed. Both Tilda and Lucas said little during the short helicopter flight back. Once they landed Tilda retreated to the hotel, remarking that she planned on turning in early that night. Lucas would be going straight home to Friday Harbor as well. They said their goodbyes to one other knowing that soon, perhaps in the next day or two, and certainly by the end of the week, they would be informed of Ophelia’s death.

The leather-bound journal felt heavy in Adele’s hands as she pulled back the cover and opened it to the last page she had read. She sipped her tea, looked down at the handwritten words, and started to read once again.
